We work with early childhood teachers and children and allied professionals to suggest and implement alternative ways of teaching and learning for the 21st century. We want kids to have opportunities to be engaged in multimodal learning and explore and represent their ideas in diverse ways. We assist teachers and child care workers to realize the potential of new learning in practice. The focus is on creating contexts and pathways for multimodal learning in the 21st century with the goal to help educators and children to use multimodal experiences so that they are able to explore and represent ideas and build knowledge in a variety of ways. We also want children to have a voice in their learning.
Additionally we support educators to think of forms of assessment that are meaningful for children and appropriate for this new type of learning. Evaluation and assessment should be an integral part of the learning process and not detached from it. To this end we have created a portrait, pedagogies and pathways framework to assist teachers to find ways of helping young children to become literate in the information age.
The findings of our most recent study have been published in a new book by Open University press called: Rethinking learning in early childhood education.
